How do I Work

Counselling is not really about telling you what to do, it is more about helping you to help yourself.

Training and Qualifications

My qualifications are a BA (Hons) in Counselling and a Foundation Degree in Counselling. I am a registered full member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy. I am also a qualified supervisor.

I have completed several other Counselling Courses to add to my list of experience. I am currently studying for several Diplomas in related areas. For several years, I have been a volunteer Counsellor with Cruse Bereavement Care, and later on as a Supervisor. I was also a Counsellor with Tees Valley Counselling Trust until it has to close.

As well as my own practice, which is called Alan Cox Counselling (Help & Listening Counselling), I provide post-accident counselling to car crash victims on behalf of rehabilitation services company and Counselling through Employee Assistance Schemes. I am also approved to provide Counselling services for participants from a national television show.

Within the Counselling environment and with my help, you can decide on the best way forward for you. I will draw on different models of therapy to help you, such as Person Centred Therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Transactional Analysis (TA), Mindfulness and Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP).

Despite the fancy names, these therapies can really help you to understand your issues.

I like to also approach your situation from a practical view and so do not just look at your presenting issues, but perhaps more importantly, look at the causes and what are the factors that are feeding into it, thereby prolonging you situation and causing continued distress.

For myself, I have experienced therapy before, so I do know what it feels like to sit in the opposite chair, and most importantly, the benefits of Counselling.

I have wide experience of many of life’s issues such as divorce, bereavement, redundancy, unemployment, retirement, moving to another part of the country, step-families, disputes and arbitration, plus many other issues.

In previous occupations, which were highly demanding managerial positions, I have also experienced over many years how much the workplace has changed, how the demands on people have increased substantially with ever decreasing resources and the toll that this takes on employees, including management.

I have been Counselling since 2008. This was firstly in the voluntary charity sector before setting up my own private practice. Please view the different pages on this website which deal with what qualifications I own, my charges, where I mostly practice and the services which I offer.
